The Gold Coast AFL Grassroots Sports Luncheon was created by a desire to showcase Australian Rules Football as a united Gold Coast group and to present a major annual event which financially benefits all participating Gold Coast based Australian Football Community Clubs.
Whilst many Clubs have staged their own Sports Luncheons and events, all Clubs are usually restricted in numbers that they can attract to an event by the size of their own Club facility.
The formula for the event is as simplistic as it is rewarding to its participants. Participating Clubs share in all profits from the event via ticket sales, auctions, raffles, etc based on each Club’s participation levels. It means that small junior Clubs can financially benefit as much as larger senior Clubs. And that is very much at the heart of the Grassroots Event. Funds raised by Clubs go back to be used in a variety of ways such as the costly running of football programs, provision of jumpers, providing balls and other training equipment, assisting with better facilities and in the administration of football on the Gold Coast. With over $220,000 distributed to participating Community Clubs in the six years to date, it is evident that the formula is a winner.
It has been estimated that over 4000 people play Australian Rules football on the Gold Coast ranging from players as young as five years old playing in the Auskick program; juniors playing in the AFL Gold Coast Juniors competition (including girls youth competitions); Under 18’s, reserves and senior teams playing QAFL & NEAFL competitions; Senior Women’s teams; through to Masters and Super Rules competitions.
The level of corporate support for the Grassroots Luncheon has been exceptional and clearly indicates a massive level of interest in the Australian Rules code on the Gold Coast. We express our sincere gratitude to our major sponsor in Allied Pickfords, who have sponsored the event since its inception, and thank Carlton & United Breweries for their continued support and participation of the event.
